Siegel Gallery – Hear Me Roar

The image I chose from the Hear Me Roar collection in the Siegal Gallery is titled Bondelswart Shawl and was taken by Kristin Capp in 2013 in Namibia. The photograph is a pigment print and shows an old woman who looks very happy and peaceful in a colorful shawl. Shawls are often seen as religious and “give comfort and spiritual strength to the sick, dying, poor or those suffering from bad fortune” (Classroom), so this photo clearly represents more than what is just visible to the viewer. The photo represents wholesomeness through the old woman’s small, yet wise smirk. I chose this photo because of how powerful this innocent looking women comes across. She seems happy, yet also caught off guard in her reaction of realizing she’s being photographed. The sharpness of the photo really lends itself well to her emotion. The various color on the shawl contrasts greatly with the rest of her black outfit and dull background making it stand out to the viewer.
