Something I noticed from examining the three photography series, “The Decisive Moment, Then They Came For Me: Incarceration Of Japanese Americans During World War II, and Air” was they all told a story.
The Decisive Moment emphasized photography as a unique narrative form. It was described as “a bible for photographers.” The series contains photographs from different styles including landscape photography, portrait photography, still life photography, and candids. Analyzing this photography book gave me the idea to make use of different types of photography styles. I want my book to incorporate many different types of photography and center around one thematic topic. Maybe something like “identity,” “emotions,” or “passion.”
Then They Came For Me: Incarceration Of Japanese Americans During World War II focused more on people as subjects. The photography series documented this dark moment in history through portrait photography, street photography, and candid photography. This photography series has given me the idea to focus on one central storyline for my book. I definitely want to have a lot of portraits, but I might also include candid photography and street photography to compliment each subject’s storyline.
Air by Vincent Laforet made the unordinary into something extraordinary. This photography series made use of interesting compositions and efficient framing to make something mundane feel exciting and new. I definitely want my photography book to incorporate some of this “flare.” Maybe this can be achieved through interesting lighting decisions or stylistic edits.
A tentative title for my photography book may be “Map Of The Heart.” I would want to feature multiple models in this book and tell their story. Maybe I could choose one emotion per model and explore different parts of their lives. Each “section” could begin with an interesting portrait and then candids, landscapes, and street photography could be used to showcase different parts of their lives. Vibrant colors and high contrast is the tentative aesthetic I am imagining right now.
Your challenge with this concept will be unity and how to pull the book together as one cohesive piece.
