“Man in Chair Holding a Fake Female Head” taken in New York in 1985 is a Vintage gelatin silver print. This photograph seems to display exactly what the title is, a man holding a mannequin head. What seems to be going on is a cluster of street vendors selling in the middle of the busy city. The tone of this piece, I think, is attributable to the period of time and location in which it was taken, New York City in the 80’s. You couldn’t find any other street photography like this if you tried. New York City is known for its craziness and vibrancy which is why I chose this photo, it captures just that. The photograph’s composition also adds to the craziness; the photo is taken on an diagonal slant making the viewer turn their heads to comprehend what is going on. The forefront of the picture contains the old man with the fake head (the most important part of the piece) and there is still even more business in the back with other sellers and crazy products. The man’s facial emotion fits well with the black and white effect because it looks very intense and serious.
I agree – the diagonal framing intensifies the unusual qualities of the subject matter.
